Upload Guide

How to Upload Grid Tiles to Instagram

The upload order is critical. Each tile is numbered so you upload them in the right sequence.

1

Unzip the Downloaded File

You'll find Grid-1.jpg through Grid-9.jpg plus an upload guide with the exact posting order.

2

Upload Starting from Grid-1

Grid-1 is the bottom-right tile. Upload in order: 1, 2, 3… up to Grid-9. Each post shifts the grid into place.

3

Use the 3:4 Crop in Instagram

Since tiles are already 1080x1350 (3:4), Instagram should display them correctly. If it crops to square, select the portrait crop option.

4

Don't Post Until the Grid is Complete

Every new post shifts the grid, so upload all tiles without interruption. Use a scheduling tool to queue them in the right order.

The Art of the Instagram Grid Puzzle

Instagram grid puzzles — where a single large image is split across multiple posts — have become a powerful visual strategy for brands, photographers, and content creators. When someone visits your profile and sees a cohesive grid, it immediately communicates professionalism and attention to detail.

When to Use a Grid Layout

  • Product launches: Build anticipation by posting grid tiles over several days, revealing the full image on launch day.
  • Brand storytelling: Use a 3x3 grid as a visual centerpiece on your profile that captures your brand identity.
  • Portfolio showcases: Photographers and designers can display a hero image at maximum impact.
  • Event announcements: Concert posters, conference visuals, or seasonal campaigns look stunning as a grid.

Instagram's 2025 Grid Update: What Changed

In January 2025, Instagram changed the profile grid from square (1:1) thumbnails to 3:4 portrait thumbnails. This means grid splitter tools that still export 1080x1080 squares will produce tiles that get cropped on the profile view. Our splitter outputs the correct 1080x1350 tiles so every pixel is visible on the grid.

Avoiding "Grid Ruining"

The biggest risk with grid posts is grid ruining — when you post unrelated content between grid tiles, shifting them out of alignment. Plan your grid carefully:

  • Upload all tiles in one session without posting anything else in between.
  • If you need to post other content, finish the grid first.
  • Use a scheduling tool like SocialCal to queue the tiles in reverse order and publish them automatically.

Each tile is 1080x1350 pixels (3:4 portrait aspect ratio), which matches Instagram's current profile grid format as of 2025.

Instagram changed the profile grid from 1:1 square to 3:4 portrait in January 2025. Tiles that are 1080x1080 will get cropped on the grid view, so 1080x1350 is now the correct format.

Upload starting from Grid-1 (bottom-right tile) through to the last grid tile (top-left). The ZIP file includes a text guide with the exact order.

For a 3x3 grid, we recommend at least 3240x4050 pixels. For 3x2, at least 3240x2700px. For 3x1, at least 3240x1350px. The tool shows a quality indicator when you upload.

Yes! The tool works on mobile browsers. Use your finger to drag and pinch to zoom when positioning the image.

Yes. The pan & zoom editor lets you position any aspect ratio within the grid. For landscape photos on a 3x3 grid, you can zoom in to fill the vertical space.

Each grid tile is a regular post, so it shifts your existing grid. Plan accordingly — upload all tiles without posting anything else in between. Consider using a Visual Grid Planner to preview how it will look alongside your existing posts.
