Common Link Preview Issues & How to Fix Them
Sharing a link and seeing the wrong image, a blank card, or a truncated title? Here are the most common Open Graph and Twitter Card problems with step-by-step fixes.
Problem
Facebook aggressively caches link previews. Even after updating your og:image, it may keep showing the old one for days.
Solution
Use the "Clear Facebook Cache" button in this tool to force a re-scrape, or paste your URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger. Make sure your og:image URL actually changed (not just the image content at the same URL).
Problem
The most common cause is a relative URL (e.g., /images/og.png) instead of an absolute URL (https://example.com/images/og.png). Other causes include the image being too small, the wrong format, or a 404.
Solution
Always use an absolute URL for og:image. Ensure the image is at least 200×200 pixels (1200×630 recommended), is a JPEG, PNG, or WebP, and returns a 200 HTTP status.
Problem
X/Twitter requires a twitter:card meta tag to render any card. Without it, shared links appear as plain text URLs with no preview.
Solution
Add <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" /> to your page’s <head>. This gives you the large landscape image card. Use "summary" if you prefer a small square thumbnail.
Problem
LinkedIn caches aggressively and can take hours to update. Missing og:image or using images smaller than 1200×627 can result in a blank card.
Solution
Open the LinkedIn Post Inspector at linkedin.com/post-inspector and paste your URL to force a refresh. Ensure your og:image is at least 1200×627 and uses an absolute URL.
Problem
Each platform has different truncation limits. Facebook cuts titles at ~60 characters, LinkedIn at ~150, and X/Twitter at ~70.
Solution
Keep og:title under 60 characters and og:description under 155 characters as a safe baseline. Use this tool to preview the exact truncation on each platform.
Problem
Platforms prioritize different tags. X/Twitter uses twitter:* tags first, Facebook and LinkedIn use og:* tags, and all fall back to <title> and <meta name="description">.
Solution
Set both Open Graph and Twitter Card tags for full control. Use twitter:title and twitter:image to override og:* values when you want a different appearance on X/Twitter.
All Supported Open Graph & Twitter Card Meta Tags
Every meta tag this tool validates, what it does, and why it matters for your social media link previews. Use this as a quick reference when adding tags to your HTML.
og:titleRequiredThe title displayed in the link card. Keep between 15–60 characters for best results across Facebook, LinkedIn, and Threads.
og:descriptionRequiredThe snippet shown below the title. Aim for 50–160 characters. Longer descriptions get truncated differently per platform.
og:imageRequiredThe preview image for your link card. Use an absolute URL pointing to a 1200×630 image (1.91:1 ratio) for optimal display.
og:image:widthWidth of the og:image in pixels. Setting this prevents platforms from fetching the image just to determine its size.
og:image:heightHeight of the og:image in pixels. Pair with og:image:width so platforms can render the card layout without downloading the image.
og:urlRequiredThe canonical URL for this page. Ensures all shares point to the same URL even if accessed via different paths or parameters.
og:typeThe type of content — "website", "article", "product", etc. Helps platforms categorize your link and may affect how it’s displayed.
og:site_nameYour website or brand name. Shown alongside the link preview on Facebook and LinkedIn to build recognition.
twitter:cardRequiredCard type for X/Twitter. Use "summary_large_image" for a large landscape image, or "summary" for a small square thumbnail.
twitter:titleTitle override for X/Twitter. If not set, X falls back to og:title. Maximum 70 characters recommended.
twitter:descriptionDescription override for X/Twitter. If not set, X falls back to og:description. Up to 200 characters.
twitter:imageImage override for X/Twitter. If not set, X falls back to og:image. Must be an absolute URL, minimum 300×157 pixels.
link rel="canonical"The preferred URL for this page. Prevents duplicate content issues when the same page is accessible at multiple URLs.
link rel="icon"Favicon for browser tabs and some link cards. Use SVG or a 32×32 PNG. Apple touch icons work as a fallback.
