Threads Username Checker
Check if a Threads handle is available. Threads handles are tied to your Instagram username — claiming Instagram automatically reserves the same handle on Threads.
How Threads handles work (and why they're different)
Threads is the only major platform that doesn't have its own username pool. Handles come from Instagram's pool — which has implications for both availability and brand strategy.
Threads handles = Instagram handles
When you claim @yourbrand on Instagram, you automatically reserve @yourbrand on Threads. There is no way to have a different handle on Threads from your IG handle.
You don't need a Threads account to reserve the handle
Just claim it on Instagram — Threads will be ready when you decide to activate. This is the cheapest cross-platform reserve in social.
Same character rules as Instagram
1–30 characters, letters / digits / periods / underscores, no leading or trailing dots, no consecutive dots. Anything valid on Instagram is valid on Threads.
But Threads SEO is its own thing
Threads search is improving and Threads posts increasingly show in Google results. Owning the handle that matches your Instagram is now a real SEO asset, not just brand consistency.
Why a Threads handle might appear taken
Almost every Threads-handle issue traces back to Instagram's shared username pool.
Someone has the IG account
If anyone — anywhere — claimed the handle on Instagram, it's "taken" on Threads. Even if they've never opened the Threads app.
IG account exists but no Threads profile
Our check sees `Threads • Log in` (suggesting the handle is free) when actually the IG owner just hasn't activated Threads. The handle is still locked. Verify by checking instagram.com/<handle> too.
Reserved by Meta brand-protection
Same brand-name reserves as Instagram apply. If Meta blocks the handle on IG, it's blocked on Threads.
Who uses the Threads username checker
Threads' rapid growth (175M+ users by 2025) makes the handle a real asset.
You haven't opened Threads yet but want the handle reserved. Verify it's free, then claim on Instagram — Threads is automatically secured.
Naming a new product. Run the multi-platform checker — IG and Threads results will always agree. If both come back free, claim them in one Instagram signup.
You're on IG but haven't activated Threads. This checker confirms the @threads.net/@yourhandle URL is yours — and you can activate Threads later with one click.
Username rules per platform
Each platform has its own format rules. The handles that work everywhere stick to letters, digits, and at most one underscore.
